After you learn all of the major pieces of the
math world: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and
exponents they begin mixing things up on you. They create a math
problem that has all of them in it. They develop a math problem
that starts with one function, moves onto another, then finishes
doing something completely different. To a successful math student
this is maddening. To a successful math student, this is merely
another thing they have to try to master; and they aren't learning
anything new.
Just as they have mastered all of these different types of
problems, patted themselves on the back, and got ready for more
math learning; they're confronted with all of them put together.
This is a math nightmare of epic proportion, till they meet Sally.
That's Aunt Sally, to be exact. Once they've met Sally the whole
problem is simple as pie. Who is Sally, it's an acronym to tell you
what functions to perform first, second, third, etc. The full
acronym is Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally or P E M D A S. First
you do whatever math there is to do in the Parenthesis, move onto
Exponents, then multiplication, division, addition, and finally
subtraction. Now with good old Aunt Sally you can do any problem
there is. Once you've learned all about Aunt Sally, the next step
is Algebra. Don't get stressed out because of the word, all it
means is it's a next step in your math knowledge.
